Black and White process

For shooting Black and White photography I use an Infrared converted Nikon D330. It’s the camera with the red body in these pictures.

I like the ethereal mood of infrared. I don’t mind if my black and white images aren’t technically perfect. I do no focus stacking or bracketing in black and white. I just let it happen. It’s very freeing.

Like so many young photographers Ansel Adams was a big influence on me. He used red filters in some of his photographs, including his famous Monolith, the Face of Half Dome. The red filter create the image's dark sky, deep shadows, and bright light.

Adams used his knowledge of technique to visualize the final print, and then used the red filter to execute his vision. And while Adams primarily used black and white film, he was also known to occasionally take infrared photos.
